Island of the Sasak

Island: Lombok

Duration: 5 days

Day 1 : Bali - West-Lombok
Breakfast. The flight over the Strait of Lombok brings us to the island east of Bali. Lombok, very different from Bali, has a more primitive culture and is dominated by the second highest volcano in the archipelago, the Rinjani. Lombok is called the gate to the Sunda Islands, the eastern islands of Indonesia with its diversity of cultures. Upon arrival we start discovering this untouched island by taking the road to the west of this island. Here we find the most beautiful bays scattered along the coast dotted with small fisherman villages and coconut tree plantations. We take a walk through one of these local villages and make contact with the indigenous people. Further on we discover several troops of monkeys coming out of the rainforest to forage for food along the road. Lunch on the beach of Sengiggi. Check-in our hotel. Dinner at our own leisure in Sengiggi and overnight.

After breakfast we take a tour to the south. We visit a local market in Kediri and from here we take the local transport called ‘cidomo’ , a kind of chariot pulled by horse. The cidomo brings us to the pottery village of Banyumulek where we stroll around the village to see the local people make pottery in a traditional way. At a pristine white beach on the south coast we take lunch in a local restaurant. Close by we visit the traditional Sasak village of Sade-Rambitan. Here in the south the original culture is still strong and the village still authentic. The people of Lombok, called Sasak follow a mix of Hindu and Islam religion living mainly from agriculture. Afterwards we go back to Sengiggi. Dinner at our own leisure. Overnight.

We start from the small harbor of Bangsal and 45 minutes later we are in a totally different world. Motorized vehicles are not allowed, ‘lay back’ is the best way to describe the way of living here. We stay at one of many accommodation depending on our taste and enjoy the rest of the day. Together with its two little sisters Meno and Air, these islands are the best place for a few days of relaxing. The crystal bleu water and white sandy beaches say it all.
