Paradise between water and fire

Island: Bali

Duration: 9 days

Day 1 : Bali
Upon arrival at the Ngurah Rai airport of Bali we go immediately to our hotel, situated in the southeast of Bali. Surrounded by coconut palms and the sound of the waves crashing onto the reef we can relax and enjoy the accommodations of the hotel. Dinner at your own leisure. Overnight.

Day 2 : Tabanan - Jatiluwih - Lovina
After breakfast we drive with VW-jeeps to the regency of Tabanan, till the 19th century a well know kingdom in Bali. During its high days the king of Tabanan ordered the building of a temple in honor of the ancestors of the royal family. The complex is surrounded by a moat, filled with water and was built as an earthly replica of the heavens. The “kori agung’ gateway and its soaring ‘meru’ towers are dedicated to the gods who dwell atop the peaks of the four highest volcano’s on the island. Perched on a high terraced slope at the foot of one of these majestic volcano’s lies Jatiluwih, a small village that deserves its name; “Truly Marvelous”. The magnificent landscapes and rice fields invite us for a soft trekking during which we truly understand why Bali is so famous in the world. We leave the regency of Badung and drive into the central mountains. The road climbs and slowly the landscape changes into fields of onions, cabbage and other vegetables. Up in the mountains the air becomes cooler when we visit the temple of Pura Ulun Danau Beratan, the most important irrigation temple in Bali. From here we go north and follow the ‘hortencia route’ which brings us to the lakes of Tamblingan and Buyan, shimmering in the sun below us. Here we are suddenly surrounded by fields of blue flowers, cultivated to be used in Hindu daily offerings. The road now winds down like a snake till we reach the north coast of Bali. In Lovina we stay at the Aneka hotel. Dinner at your own leisure. Overnight at the Aneka hotel. |

On the way we first visit the unique temple of Beji in Sangsit, a ‘subak’ temple dedicated to ‘Dewi Sri’, goddess of rice. Built in the 15th century this temple sports an overflow of stone decorations and is built in pink sandstone. We drive to the regency of Bangli to drink in the splendid view of Kintamani on top of the crater rim. This caldera, 14 km wide holds the second most active volcano of Bali, the Batur and its lake next to it. Coffee with view over the volcano. From here the vegetation slowly changes from pine tree forest to once again tropical gardens. At the foot of Mount Agung, home to the gods we have lunch. In Tenganan, one of the villages of the ‘Bali Aga’ we can see how these aristocratic Hindu, not permitted to work in the fields, make the double ‘ikat’ only found here. In the small harbor village of Padang Bai we check-in our small hotel. Diner at leisure. Overnight in Padang Bai.
